What is GPT Image 2.5?

GPT Image 2.5 is OpenAI's latest image generation and editing model. Released in September 2026, it's the same technology behind ChatGPT Images 2.5. Compared with GPT Image 2, it renders crisper details, more believable lighting, and richer textures. It also does a much better job of keeping people and products from your reference photos recognizable, laying out text and infographics accurately, and sticking to your instructions over several rounds of edits. Transparent backgrounds are supported out of the box.

The model comes in two versions. Flare is the smaller, faster option—OpenAI says it cuts latency by up to 50% versus the previous generation—so it's the natural pick for everyday content and high-volume work. Sunburst is the full-size model: it takes longer, but you get noticeably higher quality and tighter control over edits, which matters for ad creatives and polished product shots.
